GEOGRAPHY 1111: INTRODUCTION TO PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY

Lab section, Fall 2001
Syllabus of August 28, 2001

host: Robert Liebermann  contact

class info: http://www.arches.uga.edu/~rjl/1111/1111.htm  and  http://www.ggy.uga.edu/people/grad/rjl/1111/1111.htm

times: Tuesday 11:00-1:00, room 215; Tuesday 2:00-4:00, room 212; Wednesday 12:30-2:15, room 212.   Class meets once a week at the designated time.   I teach three sections of this class, so it is possible to attend another session if you are unable to attend yours for a legitimate reason and you speak with me about it – but please do this only if necessary, since our lab rooms are rather crowded.   All rooms GGY Building.  The class won't usually last the full 2 hours, though I will always be available for the full period if you want. Tests and quizzes may require the full time, so do not schedule other activities for the class period.

office: room 31 (in basement of GGY bldg.), office hours Tuesday 9-10:45am or (better option) other times mutually convenient by appointment -I am flexible. I also encourage communications regarding lab questions, policies, etc. via email.

objectives:Application and further understanding of concepts learned in the lecture section. You will work mainly from the lab manual, doing what might be called "puzzles", to better understand geographical phenomena. The material is similar to that covered in lecture, though at times may not coincide. The lab is not the same as the lecture, however, and the tests in lab and lecture are separate, as is your grade evaluation. Attending one does not forgive skipping the other.

readings:The schedule of exercises is given on the reverse of this sheet, and will be adhered to as closely as possible. Read over the exercises before lab, and be sure to bring the materials needed for that exercise (calculator, ruler, colored pens, etc.). It is also very helpful to bring the lecture text to class or know someone who does.

materials: Christopherson, R. W., and G. L. Hobbs (2000). Applied Physical Geography: Geosystems in the Laboratory, third edition. The lecture text and an atlas (such as "Goode's World Atlas") are also handy for this class. Additional materials may occasionally be needed and will be mentioned previous to the exercise.

grading:Grading in the lab is separate from the lecture. In lab, it will be based on the following: 30% for each of two tests (not cumulative), 30% total for quizzes (also not cumulative) and/or homework assignments (probably total of 4-6), and 10% for attendance, disposition, and general behavior. Tests and quizzes will not be "open book", but relevant materials will always be provided (e.g., maps, analemma, etc.) as needed, and will be announced at least a week prior to being given. There is no extra credit option for the class, so keep on schedule with study, and see me if you get behind! The last day to drop this class with a grade of "W" is Friday October 12, and will be after the first test is graded and returned.

attendance:Mandatory; I will occasionally send around an attendance sheet to sign.   If you have missed a class for any reason it’s your job to find out about any announcements made or assignments given.   If, for some reason, you miss a class for an unavoidable reason: please provide me with some type of documentable valid proof for your absence. If you have a conflict with the test dates (though I advise against it) you need to tell me well in advance of the date, and you will also need to contact the Office of Academic Assistance (542 3564) to clear a makeup time for the test.

conduct:Be attentive and civilized in class. Drinks are ok, but food is not. No newspaper reading, etc., is appropriate during class, and this includes the beginning of class. I encourage you to work together in groups as you like, or ask each other's advice, or work alone. This does not mean you may copy your neighbor's answers! Needless to say, there will be no cheating (as defined in UGA Scholastic [Dis]honesty Code)! I expect regular, on time attendance, but if you can show me that you've finished the work satisfactorily, I may allow you to leave earlier.
